SYME -- Dr. Oscar Syme, April 4, 1919 - October 24, 2010. Survivors: daughter: Dr. Roberta H. Syme and husband Dr. Myron G. Rightman of Santa Fe; son: Peter Syme of Santa Fe; son: Dr. William C. Syme and wife, Dr. Joyce Phillips of Albuquerque; grandchildren: Noah P. Syme and Rachel E. Syme, of Albuquerque and New York City; sister: Gustalyn McNamara; brother: David Syme and wife, Pat Syme, all of Albuquerque, and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Syme was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming to James and Helen Syme. His early life was spent in Colorado and Wyoming, and he and his family moved to Albuquerque in 1936, where he lived and thrived for the majority of his life. He graduated from the University of New Mexico and went on to graduate from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and promptly began an internship at the Bellevue Hospital in New York City. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the Army Air Corps while stationed in the Philippines. Shortly after being discharged, he began his residency in Pediatrics at the Babies Hospital in New York, and then returned to Albuquerque in 1949, where he practiced Pediatrics until 1986, caring for many generations of notable New Mexicans from their infancy. In 1942, he married Miriam Higbee, his college sweetheart and the breadwinner through his years of medical school training and residency program. Outside of caring for patients and for Miriam and his three children, he was a member of the American Medical Association, the New Mexico Medical Society, Greater Albuquerque Medical Association, Four Hills Country Club, and Central United Methodist Church. He had a true green thumb, earning the title of Master Gardener and a television segment on his legendary backyard crops. He was also an avid golfer and fly fisherman, and enjoyed jogging in the neighborhood park, and setting out luminarias every Christmas. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to UNM Medical School, 2211 Lomas Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, NM, or to Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, 650 West 168th St., New York, NY 10032. A memorial service is pending.
