STEELE -- Fr. Thomas Steele, S.J. died on Monday, October 25 in Denver, CO. He was born in St. Louis, MO, on November 6, 1933. He entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits)in 1951 and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1964. After completing his PhD, in English at UNM, he taught both at Regis University and at UNM until 1977, when he moved to Albuquerque and Immaculate Conception Parish where he was active in pastoral ministry and also helped out in the East Mountain area. The religious history, art and cultures of the Southwest was a second career for Fr. Steele. He authored, edited and co-authored several published works including "Santos and Saints: The Religious Folk Art of Hispanic New Mexico", and "The Indians of Arizona and New Mexico". He developed the Regis University Santo Collection and served as curator for many years. Fr. Steele is survived by three sisters: Mary Cova of MO., Betty Reilling and Dotty Steele of AZ. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Ave NW, Albuquerque.
