MAES -- Eddie Maes, age 77, peacefully passed away on September 30, 2010. He was born in Willard, NM on April 18, 1933, the sixth of eight children. He was a self taught guitar player and amazing singer who admired Elvis, Hank Williams, and other country stars. Eddie had his moment of fame at age 16 on the Dick Bill Radio Show, singing "I'll Sail My Ship Alone," and sung at many of the east mountain dances of that time. Mr. Maes served in the U.S. Air Force, enlisting at age 17 and celebrated his 18th birthday in basic training at Sheppard AFB, Texas. He proudly volunteered to serve in the Korean conflict and completed his tour in Chin Hae, Korea. He was honorably discharged as a three stripe Airman, First Class in 1955. To the day he died, he proudly displayed Korean War memorabilia, and his service medals. He loved to wear a Korean War service cap given to him by his son, Edward. During his time in the service his relationship with Nena grew from friend to "Novia". He was married to the love of his life, Nena Tenorio (Magdalen Maes) the day after Christmas, 1955. They were wonderful dancers, and at every family occasion their family loved to watch them dance the polka. Eddie attended Draughn's Business school and St. Joseph's College. He began his 25 year career at Kirtland AFB as a Civil Servant. In the next decades Eddie and Nena's family grew to include four children; sons' and daughters' in-law; 13 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. During retirement Eddie enjoyed volunteering his time at UNMH as a baby cuddler and spent time traveling and relaxing at the penny slot machines. He returned to the work force as an elementary school crossing guard for many years until his health forced him to give up the job he truly loved. He is known to the family as "the favorite uncle"' because of his love of children and he lost many arm wrestling contests to them. He is also survived by two sisters and one brother. Services will be held at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont NE, on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Rosary will be at 10:00 a.m. Funeral mass will follow the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. A reception will be held after mass in the St. Magdalen Hall at Annunciation. Immediate family will attend the internment at Gate of Heaven. Eddie lived as an example to all of us in life and in death as a patient, good natured, simple and moral man, faithful to his family and to God. He lived and died without regrets, lived a full and satisfied life and was ready to be with God when his time came. Eddie Maes will be greatly missed.
