DORATO -- Peter, 77, died Saturday, September 18, 2010. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he was a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico since 1976 and was named a Gardner-Zemke Professor in 1999. He was internationally known for his work in Systems and Control, received numerous awards including the World Automation Congress Lifetime Achievement Award, the IEEE Third MILLENIUM Medal, and the School of Engineering Senior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. He was also an IEEE Fellow, authored/co-authored seven books on engineering, and was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies. Peter was an avid traveler, tennis enthusiast (nationally ranked senior player), and lover of all things Italian (except opera). With daughter Sylvia, he co-authored a book on Italian culture that served as the text book for his continuing education course. Peter opened his home to neighbors, international students, and anyone else who embraced a passion for food, wine, music, or math. He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Madeleine; two daughters, Sylvia and Veronica; two sons, Chris and Alex; and ten grandchildren. Please join the Dorato's for a celebration of Peter's life on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 for a visitation at 6:00 p.m., and a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at French - University Chapel. A mass will be held for Peter on Thursday, September 23, 2010, 10:00 a.m., at the Aquinas Newman Center at UNM with burial and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers the family is establishing a memorial fund for scholarships in Dr. Dorato's honor. Contributions may be made to the UNM Foundation, notation Peter Dorato Memorial Fund.
