FUENTES -- Kate "Katie" Fuentes passed quietly into the arms of our Lord on the morning of August 8, 2010, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by her family and loved ones at home. Kate was born in Los Padillas, NM, the youngest daughter of Petrita Salazar-Padilla and Antonio Padilla. Kate is survived by her husband Ramon Fuentes; brothers, Antonio and Aresenio; her children, Cathy Zubia and her husband Danny, Jerome Fuentes, Joseph Fuentes; her grandchildren, Annette Atencio and husband Mario, Karin Medina, Gabriel Medina and wife Nikki, Derek Marra and Lauren Medina; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Faith, Noah, Mackenzie, Matea and Madison; foster children, Mary Lou Moya and husband Ernest, and Louie Moya and wife Debra. Extended family members are Kirk and Angela Zubia, parents of Giovanni and Desiree, Jason and Tera Zubia, parents of Alex. Kate had a full life with humble beginnings and was most proud of her enduring marriage of 64 years to her husband and best friend, Ramon. Never one to be idle, Kate was a talented artisan. She knitted and crocheted, painted and dabbled in all types of craft projects, including her passion- quilting. She would work countless hours on her quilts and each is truly a work of art to behold. Family members treasure her quilts and feel her love as they bundle themselves up in them. Kate always had a garden and would can fruits and vegetables for use as she prepared delicious meals for her family and friends. Her red chile enchiladas, fruit pastelitos and homemade bread were favorites of all who tried them. Everywhere she went and whatever she was doing, Kate would always be dressed "to-the-nines". Ramon achieved the rank of Captain with the Kirtland AFB Fire Department and together, he and Kate built their home in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Together, Kate and Ramon travelled through Mexico and the southwestern U.S., including California where Ramon had extended family. She and Ramon assembled an extensive photographic record of their lives together. Kate's strong Catholic faith and zest for life sustained her through her battles with cancer. She belonged to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Alameda. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and caregivers who have provided their care to Kate, especially Dr. Dennie Jones of Albuquerque Health Partners and Jacque and Swana, her home care nurses with Heritage Hospice. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening, August 12, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 9502 Fourth Street NW. Service of Christian Burial will be Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at also at the Church. Private Inurnment is planned for a later date.
