SUTHERLAND -- Antonette Pilgrim Pouline Jacobsen de Hoffmann of Edgewood, NM passed away peacefully in Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, July 31, 2010. Pilgrim was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1932, in Warren, PN, to Elsie Boote of Brighton, England and Poul De Hoffmann of Copenhagen, Denmark. Raised in Solvang, CA, Pilgrim graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1951. After graduation, Pilgrim worked at the Serra Shop at the Santa Barbara Mission where she met and married Frank A. Sutherland, her husband of 38 years. She is survived by her four children and their families: daughter Maria Sutherland and grandson, Michael Smiel; daughter Anna Sutherland and partner, Bradley Hartman, and grandchildren, Christopher and Cassandra Smatana and Joshua Plante; son Donnan Sutherland and partner, Andrea Difazio; and son Marq Sutherland and fiance, Eva Lopez-Valleja. She is also survived by her sister and three brothers and their families: Nina and Al Gervais, Jon and Lynn Hoffmann, Russ and Nancy Hoffmann, Tony and Donna Hoffmann, as well as numerous cherished cousins, her closest friends, Steve and Beate Ortley and family, and many more close friends and caretakers. Pilgrim loved you all dearly! A true romantic and creative soul, Pilgrim lived life to the fullest and always made lemonade out of lemons. A devoted Catholic, she loved unconditionally and her faith and prayers from the Carmelite Sisters gave her strength and direction throughout her life. Originally trained as a modern dancer, Pilgrim took art classes at the Art Center School of Design. A loving homemaker and mother, she became a home health aide later in life, caring for the elderly and AIDS patients, many of whom sought out her loving, accepting, and supportive care. Pilgrim genuinely loved her family, pets, parties, music, dance, theater, art, movies, books, travel, flowers, and delicious food and drink, including hot coffee in the morning. She outlived her cancer prognosis by 4 months, never losing her beautiful spirit, positive outlook, or quick wit. Pilgrim is an example to all who knew her of joy, faith, and youthful innocence. We love you, Mom! We miss you and your sparkling eyes, your sense of humor, and your sweet smile! May God's love be with you always on your new journey!
