COLLIER -- Irene Margaret Collier, a resident of Albuquerque, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the age of 84. Irene is survived by her four sons: Robert E. Collier, MD and wife Helen Hansen of St. Paul, MN, David S. Collier and wife Joan Shettig of Charlottesville, VA, Christopher P. Collier and wife Rachel of Vero Beach, FL, Thomas K. Collier and wife Mary of Albuquerque, NM; 12 grandchildren: Heather, Mary, Sean, Adam, Rebecca, Suzanne, Katie, Jackie, Sam, Claire, Kevin and Danny; four great-grandchildren: Olivia Irene, Lauren, Alice and Ryan; one brother, Gordon Elliot and wife Ruth of University Place, WA; and one niece; and four nephews. Born on December 12, 1925, to Gordon and Ada Elliott in Dayton, Ohio. Graduated from Roosevelt High School, Dayton, OH in 1943 and attended the University of Cincinnati for two years. Married Robert E. Collier, Capt. USAF at Wright Patterson AFB Chapel December 15, 1945. Organized and served as first President of Officers' Wives Garden Club, Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO '61-'62. Grey Lady volunteer (American Red Cross) at Air Force Academy Hospital and Tulsa OK. Unit Chairman of Oakwood League of Women Voters, Dayton, OH '69-'70. Active in Democratic Party. Precinct Committee Woman in OH and FL. President Democratic Woman's Club, Indian River County, FL, early '70s. Irene also worked in sales, property management, administrative office work, house mother for Kappa Kappa Gamma in Corvallis, OR at OSU '96-'98. The Colliers lived in many places during their marriage: Ohio, Michigan, Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico ('52-'56), California, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Florida. Robert, Lt. Col. retired in 1962 from the Air Force. They were divorced in 1981. Irene returned to live in Albuquerque for five years before moving back to Ohio, Virginia, and Corvallis, OR, and then settling in Albuquerque in 2001. Irene loved to dance, garden, entertain and most of all, help other people in need. The family would like to thank Mom's many caregivers over the past couple of years, the staff at Carefree Living, and Presbyterian Hospice. A memorial service for family and friends is being planned; please contact the family for more information.
