GRINDELL -- Albert G. Grindell, 92, longtime resident of the Albuquerque area passed away at Vista Care Hospice on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, surrounded by his loved ones. Albert G. Grindell was born in Baltimore, MD to Norma and Thomas Grindell. He was raised in Baltimore and summered with extended paternal family in Pittsburgh, PA. As a young man, he was a boilermaker and machinist for the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road. During WW II he served in the Army Air Corps as a machinist and Master Sergeant in the 2nd Base Air Depot (BAD-2) in Seething, England (1943-1945). After WWII, he attended Carnegie Tech University, Pittsburgh, PA and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer. Immediately following, but briefly, he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, prior to transferring to Oak Ridge National Laboratories. In Oak Ridge, TN, he pursued graduate school and a career in non-weapons engineering research and application. From 1950 to 1982, he was employed by ORNL as a mechanical engineer in the Experimental Engineering Department of the Reactor Division performing tests and developing cooling systems for successive generations of nuclear reactors. He and his family attended First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and served as an usher and deacon. For entertainment, he played softball on the ANP team of ORNL. He was an avid major league baseball fan, attending games whenever he traveled for business or pleasure. In 1987, he and his wife moved to Corrales, NM to live near family. He has been a well regarded resident of Grand Court Senior Living, Albuquerque, since 2004. He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Edwardine D. Grindell and brother, Thomas E. Grindell. He is survived by son, Don K. Grindell of San Francisco, CA. Loving grandson, Mica Grindell-Holmes, daughter Maureen E. Grindell and Mark D. Holmes live in Albuquerque, NM and will miss him as a devoted, supportive father. He is also survived by sister Thelma R Connolley of Baltimore, MD, plus many cherished nieces and nephews in the Mid- Atlantic region.
