MIZE -- Ulman "Jack" Mize, 95, a longtime resident of Albuquerque and Ruidoso passed away on November 21, 2009. Born April 23, 1914 in Madison County, TX, he quit school after the eighth grade to work to help support his mother and brothers. "Red", as he was known then, served in the Army in WWII earning a Bronze Star in the Italian campaign. The family moved from South Houston to Albuquerque in 1952 and he opened Mize Barber Shop. As president of the local barber's union he led the fight for a 5 day work week for barbers. That is why many barbershops in Albuquerque are closed Mondays. He became a Realtor in 1957 and had Jack Mize Realty and later worked for Hooten/Stahl Realtors. Jack moved to Ruidoso in the mid 1970's and operated Blue Gem Jewelry with his wife. He is survived by his wife, LaRue Mize and great grand-daughter Alissa of Ruidoso; son Robert Mize and wife, Mary Candace; and his grandson David Mize of Albuquerque. He was a Master Mason at South Houston Lodge No. 1295, a life member of the Ruidoso Elks Lodge 2086, and served as a Deacon and Elder at Sombre Del Monte Christian Church in Albuquerque. At his request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to your favorite charity in Jack's name.
