ORTIZ -- Steven Ortiz, MD, 53, passed away on October 13, 2009. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1974. Was NM State Gymnastics champion while in high school. Graduated from University of New Mexico, with a BS in Medical Technology in 1978. Attended on an academic scholarship and competed on the UNM gymnastics team for three years. Worked at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Albuquerque for almost ten years before returning to school to pursue a medical degree. Graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1991. Completed medical residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, in 1995. He is survived by his wife Dana Bauder whom he married in 1987; two daughters, Nicole and Alyssa; Parents Dolores (deceased) and Al Ortiz; Siblings Lorraine Sanchez (Gerald), Richard (Olga), Daniel, Lillian Coleman (Robert), Rebecca Coleman (Terry), and Karen Pena (Frank). Extended Family of ten nieces and nephews and many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. Rosary is to be recited 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Queen of Heaven Mortuary, 1562 E. Baseline Rd, Mesa, AZ. Funeral Mass is to be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2009 at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, 3450 W. Ray Rd, Chandler, AZ. Interment is to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Donor Network of Arizona, in honor of and with many thanks to Danny Ortiz who gave him a second chance, to the American Cancer Society, to Hospice of the Valley, or a favorite charitable organization.
