KING -- Elbert W. King Jr. was born on December 21, 1919, in Geneseo, Illinois, and died in his home in the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque on Saturday, September 26, 2009. He attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and received his dental degree from the Dental Division of Loyola University in Chicago. During World War II, he served in the Pacific. Upon returning to the U.S., he attended graduate school at the University of Illinois, where he received a Master's Degree in 1949. In 1950, he moved to Albuquerque to begin his orthodontics practice. He practiced for 40 years, straightening teeth for children all over New Mexico. During this time, he served as a consultant to the Navajo Reservation Health Services in Ft. Defiance, Arizona, regarding children with cleft palate. He also worked part time at Los Alamos National Laboratory when it was a closed facility. Throughout his career he was active in the American Association of Orthodontia. Upon retirement, he pursued a hobby of growing apples, his business, King Orchards, becoming a notable source of quality apples throughout northern New Mexico. He is survived by his wife Rowena Rivera King; son Brian King; daughter-in-law Nicole King; daughter Lesley King; and two grandchildren, Brenda King and Amy King. Throughout his life he was active in sports, especially fly fishing and skiing. He was also a trustee of the New Mexico chapter of the Nature Conservancy and a long-time resident of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Services will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano NW. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
