HAYES -- Aldis S. Hayes, a resident of Montebello on Academy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2009. He was 97 years old. He was a well-respected and accomplished mechanical engineer, a beloved husband, father and family man. Following graduation from the University of Wisconsin, he worked for Perfect Circle in Hagerstown, Indiana. In 1952, he accepted a position at Sandia Laboratories and moved with his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a member of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers and the Professional Engineer's Society. During his tenure at Sandia Laboratories he authored manuscripts on quality control and taught courses on statistics and quality control methodology. He and his wife, Lillian, taught ballroom dancing at the Coronado Club on Sandia Base. He was passionate about writing and reciting poetry. Following his retirement in 1976 he became an excellent painter and an accomplished ping-pong player - playing into his late 80s. His favorite times were spent on an island at Rainy Lake, Minn. with his wife, Lillian and family members. He was an exceptionally talented teacher and spent hours with grandchildren on homework and learning games. He is survived by his wife of almost 73 years; his three children, Lynn Spray, Susan Benham and husband, Bob all of Albuquerque, and Scott Hayes and wife, Jan of Indianapolis, Indiana. He has six grandchildren, Steve Spray and wife, Lori, Shelley Spray, Dana Braccia and husband, Matt, Jill Schenk and husband, Hans, Alan Benham and wife, Beth and Kellen Hayes. Eight great-grandchildren also survive him, Hannah and Ally Spray, Abby and Jeff Braccia, Kenzie and Liam Schenk and Will and Allison Benham. We all miss him and he will never be forgotten. Per his request, no funeral service will be held at this time.
