HANES -- Wilfred Harold "Hal" Hanes Jr., a resident of Albuquerque since 1965, died peacefully Sunday, July 12, 2009. Hal was born August 1, 1947 to Wilfred and Willene Hanes in Leesburg, Ohio. Hal served in the U.S. Air Force, from which he was honorably discharged. He owned a mobile home service company for ten years and later went on to work as a brake mechanic and auto emissions inspector. Most recently, he drove school buses for Durham School Services, which was one of his favorite jobs. A lifelong learner, Hal graduated from Highland High School in 1965 and then pursued an accounting degree from Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute. Later in life, he achieved a home inspector certificate and was working on a locksmithing self-study course at the time of his death. Hal was a very sociable person and enjoyed making many friends throughout his life. One of his favorite pastimes was riding his Honda Goldwing motorcycle. He belonged to the Goldwing Road Riders Association, in which he served as Chapter "W" Director. He also was a life member of the National Riffle Association. He is survived by his son Daryl Hanes and wife, Josephine; brother Wallance (Lee) Hanes and wife Elizabeth; grandchildren Kaleb and Hanah Hanes; niece Jeanni Sintas; great-niece Jasmine Salazar; and his dear friends Brenda Bowser, Kevin Michaud, and Roberta Michaud. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William Howland, Jr. A Memorial Service with military honors will be held July 24, 2009 10:30 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Afterwards, the cremains will be placed in the columbarium there.
