GUTIERREZ -- Mary Pilar Montano de Gutierrez died on March 3, 2009, in Orange Park, Florida at the age of 82. She was born in Canjilon, New Mexico on December 3, 1926, to Bailon and Eugenia Montano. She attended schools in Canjilon and Albuquerque. She married Gabriel Gutierrez, Sr. in 1946 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She is survived by sons: Gabriel Gutierrez, Jr. of Silver City, New Mexico, Gilbert Gutierrez of Greeley, Colorado, Steven Gutierrez of Deming, New Mexico; daughter, Lynda Nieber of Friendswood, Texas; grandchildren: Gabriel III, Amy, Jenni, Rebecca, Aaron, Katie, Steven, Michael, and Matthew; 5 great grandchildren: and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel of 39 years; her parents; five brothers; and five sisters. Her remaining sister, Ernestina, lives in Peoria, Arizona. Mary committed her life to helping other people and received numerous awards of recognition for her service. She loved to work with fabric, yarn and stained glass, making items to benefit those in need. She had an interest in genealogy which culminated in her compilation of the Montano Family Genealogy Book 1810-1984. She was a long-time member of El Buen Samaritano Methodist Church in Albuquerque. She was active in the Loyal Order of the Moose, home lodge No.1202, Las Cruces, New Mexico, before retiring to Moosehaven, the City of Contentment, in Orange Park, Florida in 2001. Moosehaven is a charitable arm of the Moose, which helps eligible members enjoy a dignified level of retirement In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Moosehaven, 1701 Park Avenue, Orange Park, Florida 32073. A celebration of Mary's life will be held at Berardinelli Family Chapel, 1399 Luisa Street in Santa Fe on Monday, March 9.
