NOWACKI -- Norbert Nowacki, Jr., age 61, died February 20, 2009 after a long battle with GIST, a rare stomach cancer. He was born January 19, 1948, in Buffalo, New York, to Norbert and Jeanne (Klocke) Nowacki. He moved to Albuquerque with his family in 1963, and graduated from Manzano High School. Norbert served in the United States Army from 1967 until 1973, completing two tours of duty in VietNam as a communications specialist. He worked for many years as a computer operator. At the time of his death, Norbert was employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he developed wonderful friendships. For many years he was active in bowling, enjoyed music, gardening, golf, and was a lifelong, die hard fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. Norbert loved Albuquerque and also loved Buffalo, where he returned to live for a period of time. Norbert is survived by his sons, Jeffrey and Christopher Nowacki; and by their mother, Beverly Nowacki, who lovingly cared for him during his illness. He is also survived by sisters Sharon Cotman of Cleveland, Ohio, Shirley Thomas of Longmont, Colorado, Amy Nickell of Lancaster, California; seven nieces and nephews, and a special and loving first cousin, Bevie Bickell, of Sarasota, Florida. Cremation has been held. An informal celebration of Norb's life will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Sunset Memorial Park at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VistaCare Hospice.
