SANCHEZ -- Joe Robert Sanchez, age 78, surrounded by his loved ones, was lifted up to heaven to join our Lord on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. He resided in Santa Rosa, New Mexico and Las Vegas, New Mexico for many years until his recent illness brought him to Albuquerque to be close to his family. He was born on July 6, 1930 in Anton Chico, New Mexico to Adelaido and Angela Sanchez. During his 35 year career as an educator, Joe Robert served the Las Vegas area Retiree Educators Association as both President and Vice-President. He earned a B.A. and M.A. degree from New Mexico Highlands University, with a B.A. degree with a major in Business Education, a minor in Social Studies, and his M.A. degree with a major in School Administration, a minor in Business Education at the secondary level. His teaching career began at the New Mexico Boy's School in Springer as a classroom teacher and also as a classroom teacher at Santa Rosa High School. Joe Robert retired from the West Las Vegas Schools where he served in several capacities, High School Principal, Armijo Elementary School Principal, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, Director of the Emergency School Assistance Act, classroom teacher at Trementina Elementary School, and Director of the Head Start Program. Joe Robert was an active member of several professional organizations including NEA New Mexico, Council for the Improvement of Education, P.T.A. Classroom Teachers Association, and Head Start Association. He also served as chairman of the Community Development Institute Board of Directors, Vice-Chairman of NEA-NM Commission on School Legislation and Finance, Professional Practice and Ethics Commission, Region VI Head Start Board of Directors, and Luna Community College Board of Directors. A Korean War Veteran, Joe Robert served four years in the U. S. Air Force. He served overseas in Korea and Japan. He was also active in several civic and veterans' organizations, as well as a loyal member of the San Miguel Democratic Party. Joe Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Serrano); daughter, Marga of Albuquerque; Son, Phillip and wife Martha of Menlo Park, CA; two grandchildren, Nathan, and Erin; brothers and sisters, Luis G. Sanchez and wife Maria Teresa, Jose G. Sanchez and wife Elizabeth, Max R. Sanchez and wife Annadelle, Daniel Sanchez, Martina Cordova, Vivian L. Sanchez, Adeline S. Chavez and husband Dan, and Patricia M. Sanchez; Brothers and sisters-in-law, Petra Sanchez, Marie Ozila Ortega and husband Eric, Loretta Campos, and Gilbert Campos, Eddie Serrano and wife Camilla, and Pamela McCue; numerous nieces and nephews will all miss their Uncle Robert. Joe Robert was a loving and compassionate person to all he encountered through his journey in life. The many lives he touched, especially his immediate family, are richly blessed, and his memories remain to comfort us until we meet again. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the Risen Savior Catholic Community Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
