ARTECHE -- Raul Arteche, 80, longtime Deming, New Mexico resident passed away Friday, January 9, 2009 following a lengthy illness at home surrounded by his family. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Graveside Service will be Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 10 o'clock in the morning at Mt. View Cemetery with Fr. Virgilio Flores officiating. Honors will be provided by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard. Raul was born in Deming on January 17, 1928. He graduated from Deming High School in 1945 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1946. Raul married Virginia Simpson on January 21, 1950 and worked with his father as a local Pepsi Cola distributor until 1958. He then joined the New Mexico State Police and during this time he graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1976 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University in 1988. He retired as captain in 1992. Raul later served as Chief of Police in Deming for 18 months. He also worked for Greyhound Bus Lines for nine years. Raul was one of the original members of the Knights of Columbus, belonged to the Sacred Heart League and was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Arteche of the home; two sons, David A. Arteche and his wife Dorothy of Rio Rancho, NM, Paul F. Arteche and his wife Linda of Socorro, NM; three grandchildren, David A. Arteche and his wife D'Rese, Denise Romero and her husband Jason, Kristopher Raul Arteche; five great grandchildren, Devon Arteche, Deline Arteche, Dayanera Romero, Jared Romero, Ayden Daniel Arteche; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Arteche, and several nieces and nephews. Raul was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Maria Arteche, two brothers, Manuel Arteche Jr. and Danny Arteche. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels 811 S.
