CHANDLER -- Mildred St. John Chandler, 93, long time resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, November 6, 2008. Born in Roswell, she moved to Albuquerque in 1935. Mildred, known to her family as "Honey," was a brave, devoted mother when it was rare to be a single parent. To support her family, she obtained a job at Albuquerque National Bank and rose to the Executive Secretary to one of the Vice Presidents. In 1959, she married Carl Chandler, moved to Washington DC and worked for the Brookings Institute. From there they moved to Huntsville where Carl worked for NASA and she for the US Army. They returned to New Mexico in 1966, moving to Belen where they created an extensive farm. Honey loved the domestic life, canning and knitting, and was finally able to devote herself to her family. As a member of PEO Chapter K and Deacon at 1st Presbyterian Church, she loved her Lord and was faithful to His word. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings including Tom St. John of Albuquerque, her son-in-law, John Cantwell and, painfully, her son, Len. As a West Point graduate, Len became the youngest Captain in the US Army, rising to Lt. Col. before he was killed in Viet Nam. Honey is survived by her devoted daughter, Glo Cantwell of Albuquerque, five grandchildren: Sarah and her husband Brian of NC, Jennifer and her husband Warren of NJ, Brett of Santa Fe, Kristin of Washington, DC and Brant with his wife Tamara, of Anchorage, AK; four great-grandchildren: Olivia & Georgia, Caroline & Julianna; Honey's sister-in-law, Virginia St. John of Albuquerque; and other loving family members, Mark & Linda Cantwell, their children Austin, Davis and Stephen of Albuquerque, Kevin and Kathleen Cantwell of Albuquerque and their children Jonathan and Mitchell. Services will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the West Side Chapel of French Mortuary at 4:00 p.m.. Officiating will be Brant & Tamara Barker, pastors of Anchorage Faith & Family Church, Anchorage, with Rev. Myron White assisting. She will be buried in Arlington, VA next to her husband Carl and her son Len. Should friends desire, Memorial Contributions may be made to the above church, PO Box 241885, Anchorage, AK 99524 or any cancer charity of their choice. There will never be another Honey and we all will miss her deeply. God Speed, Honey. French Mortuary, Inc. 1111 University Blvd. NE (505) 843-6333 www.frenchmortuary.com
