WEINBRECHT -- John Frederick Weinbrecht passed from this life on October 18, 2008 at the age of 91. He was born on May 10, 1917 in Terra Haute, IN to Amelia and Albert Weinbrecht. After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from Rose-Hulman Polytechnic Institute, John served active duty in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1941 to 1952, including 3.5 years in the Pacific conflict during WWII. He ultimately attained the rank of Colonel, serving in the Army Reserve until 1967. John joined what is now Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1953, and worked on several innovative nuclear and laser programs until retirement in 1983. He and wife Nancy subsequently moved to Albuquerque where he was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and passionately engaged in the design and development of a novel compressor technology. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling, grandfathering, complex mechanical design, and just plain life in general. John is survived by Nancy, his loving wife of nearly 60 years; son John Jr. and his wife Paulette of Oklahoma City, son Ed and his wife Kathleen of Edgewood; and grandchildren Eden, Eve, and Chelsey Weinbrecht, Shannon McCulloch, Rachelle Young, and Brent Blount. He was preceded in death by brothers Albert, Standau, and Frank; and grandson Jeff Foster. A Memorial Service will take place at 3:30 on Saturday October 25, 2008 at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE in Albuquerque. John will be buried at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, John's family requests that donations be made to either St. Mark's memorial fund or to a charity of your choosing.
