UHLENHUTH -- Helen Lyman Uhlenhuth was born to Howard Fisk Lyman and Grace Jorgensen Lyman on 6 April 1930 in Mitchell, SD. She died on 16 August 2008 at Manzano del Sol, Albuquerque, NM, after a long illness. She was the third child and the first daughter in a farm family of nine children. Helen attended her first 12 years of school in Mitchell. Thereafter, she completed an Associate of Arts degree at Boise Junior College in June of 1949 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Washington in Seattle in September of 1952. She then practiced nursing in several areas at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center until the family moved to Chicago in 1968. There she entered graduate school at the University of Illinois and in September of 1976 obtained a Master of Science in medical/surgical nursing. She subsequently served as a teacher-practitioner at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital for four years. In Seattle Helen met and in 1952 married Eberhard H. Uhlenhuth in a union of more than 56 years. She gave him three children and, with matchless devotion and energy, supported the family during her husband's advanced medical training. She took the lead in all family and social activities. During the move from Chicago to Albuquerque in 1985, she played a major role in the design and construction of a solar home. She always maintained an active interest in current events and was an avid gardener. Helen is survived by her husband; six sisters; her children, Kim U. Wagner (spouse Thomas), Karen Jane Uhlenhuth, and Eric Rolf Uhlenhuth (spouse Linda); and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will take place at Manzano del Sol, 5201 Roma Ave., NE, Albuquerque, NM, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Uhlenhuth Family Research Professorship in Psychiatry or to a charity of your choice. Please make checks payable to The University of New Mexico Foundation, with the name of the Professorship on the Memo line, and mail to the Foundation at 700 Lomas Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131.
