BLOOM -- Charlotte Miller Bloom passed away on Wednesday July 9, 2008. She is survived by her son, Allan M. Bloom and daughter-in-law Leslye of Blacksburg, VA; her daughter, Linda S. Bloom of Albuquerque; and granddaughter, Kate Burn of Las Cruces; and her daughter, Phyllis Stice, son-in-law, Bob Stice of Albuquerque, and granddaughter, Mary Kierst, of Irving, TX. She is also survived by numerous other family and friends who loved her and her independent spirit. Char was a calming and stabilizing force in the lives of those she loved. Her husband, Colonel (Ret.) Maurice M. Bloom, Jr., who died October 16, 2006 after more than 60 years of marriage, felt this calming influence perhaps more than most. J.R., as he was known, was a kidder and a great teller of stories and whenever J.R.'s audience was unsure how to react to his jokes and stories, Char responded with her ever wise, "Just nod and laugh, dear." Born August 12, 1920 in Sheridan, WY, Charlotte Fugate Miller was the second child of Ralph E. and Edith Fugate Miller. Charlotte grew up near the small town of Acme, WY, spending much of her early childhood in a log cabin. The strength and no-nonsense attitude that come from a life lived on the frontier were with Char her whole life. Her family moved to Pennsylvania in the 1930s and after she graduated from Allegheny College, Char and J.R. married September 14, 1943, just before he left to fight in World War II. When J.R. was shot down on his 50th mission over Austria, she remained strong for him and for their son, who was born while J.R. was in a German prison camp. Those who were close to Charlotte, her children and grandchildren, know that she never said more than was necessary. When her loved ones shared good news with her, she looked at them proudly, a small smile touching her lips and her eyes, but she said only, "That's nice, dear." She always sat or stood straight, never allowing herself to slouch, and from that vantage point she took in everything around her. Though she commented on very little, Charlotte saw everything. Charlotte loved her husband and her family fiercely. She loved to travel, she loved New Mexico, loved bird watching, and a good mystery novel. She was dearly loved by all those who knew her, and she will be sorely missed by her family, who were touched every day by her quiet strength, her sly sense of humor, and her constant love. Charlotte's cremated remains will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery alongside her husband. We are glad to direct those wishing to acknowledge Charlotte's life with a gift to contact Casa Esperanza, P O Box 40472, Albuquerque, NM 87196-0472 (http://casaesperanzanm.org; contact Eileen Cook, CEO).
