STEARNS -- ROBERT JAMES Maj. Robert James Stearns (US Army retired) died Sunday, December 2, 2007, at Albuquerque Heights Nursing Home. Robert was recently preceded in death by his loving wife, Dolene in May of this year; and is survived by his daughter, Anita Valente of Albuquerque; son, James Stearns of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Carrie Nelson of Albuquerque, Ginny Stearns of Hawaii, Cara Valente-Compton of Albuquerque, Vic Valente of Ardmore, OK, and David Valente of Alpharetta, GA; and six great-grandchildren who loved the way he wiggled his ears. Robert was born in Edmore, ND on July 13, 1921. He met his wife Dolene (Lee) while working on her brother-in-law's farm and they married a short time later, on October 5, 1941. Robert was a decorated Ordinance officer, having fought bravely in the European theater during WWII and in the Korean conflict. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for his brave service to our nation. After retiring from the military Bob and Lee spent nearly every day of their lives together, and enjoyed traveling the country, and settling in Edgewood, NM. Bob was known for his patriotism, love of a good joke, Snicker's bars, his Norwegian heritage and for his tremendous generosity. He was also a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Shriners, and the VFW.
