GILLIS -- Velma Gillis, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Saturday, November 3, 2007. She is survived by her children, Donna O'Connor and husband, Tom of Great Falls, MT, James Gillis and wife, Joanne of El Paso, TX, Michael Gillis of El Paso, TX, John Gillis and wife, Candace of Santa Fe, NM, and Richard Gillis and wife, Christina of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Kurt O'Connor, Tara Demick and husband, Mark, Tim O'Connor, Anne Dimond and husband, Sean, Patrick Gillis and wife, Chrissy, and Amy Neumann and partner, Sandy; six great-grandchildren, Stasia Demick, Emiley Demick, Ave Dimond, Isaiah Dimond, Grace Gillis, and Phoebe Neumann; sister, Lela Grant of Alabama; and numerous other relatives and friends. Velma was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Edward G. Gillis in 2001; and four brothers, Jesse, Conrad, Clifford, and Hilton Shadwell. She was born on July 25, 1914 in Marling, MO to Walter John and Laurie Edith Shadwell and they moved to Michigan when she was a child. It was there she met and married Edward G. Gillis in August 1936. They moved to Albuquerque in November 1949. It was here that they raised their five children. She was a founding member of Holy Ghost Parish. Velma was a loving mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Rosary will be held Monday, December 3, 2007, 9:30 a.m. at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE, followed by Memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
