BALLWEBER -- Rev. Eugene L. Ballweber passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2007 after a long illness in Albuquerque, NM. Eugene was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 2, 1926. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in 1952 for the archdiocese of Chicago. Eugene was a United States Air Force chaplain for nine years beginning in 1960. His foreign duties were in Japan and Greece. He moved to Albuquerque with his mother in 1970. Eugene's first assignment in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe was a counselor at Catholic Charities. He was instrumental in the founding of the Cristo Rey (Covenant) Community in 1971 and then Drug Addicts Recovery Enterprise (DARE) serving as a counselor on the staff until the mid 1980's. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Archbishop's liaison for the Catholic Charismatic Movement for many years until 1993. Eugene was pastor of the San Clemente Church in Los Lunas and later served the churches in the area of Penasco, NM. He was a resident of Manzano del Sol Healthcare Center for 12 years prior to his death. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward A.; his mother, Catherine; and brothers, Robert and Edward. He is survived by his nephews and nieces, Dennis, Gary, Robert, Richard, William, Gail, Donna, Nancy, Janet, and Lynne. He is also survived by members of the Cristo Rey Community including Antonio and Beatrice Aragon, Ellerd and Josephine Garcia, Arthur and Rozzanne Garcia, Edward and Maria Chavez, Aurora Apodaca and Quentin Mischke.
