JOHNSON -- Bess Landis Johnson was born February 15, 1910 in Fields, NM near Clovis. She was the only daughter of six children, two of whom died in infancy. They were raised on a farm and her parents were homesteaders. The children had to travel five miles to go to school in a horse-drawn buggy. Part of their lives were spent struggling through the years of the depression. Sometimes on Sunday, their entire family would have Sunday dinner with neighbors and the only mode of transportation was in a horse-drawn wagon. After she graduated from Clovis High School, in 1930, she worked for Dr. Lancaster assisting in the homes of new mothers who had just given birth, delivered by Dr. Lancaster. She did that for a couple of years, before moving to Albuquerque where she worked at a dry cleaners until World War II, at which time she joined the Women Army Corps - W.A.C. where she worked as a jeep driver stationed in Florida. After the war ended, she returned to Albuquerque, where she continued working in the dry cleaning business. Around 1950, she married Arnold W. Johnson. They were married nearly 50 years before he died in 2000. During their happy marriage, they attempted to have a family, but the first child was a miscarriage and they never had other children. Bess and Arnold enjoyed their church attendance and activities during the many years they were members of Christ Unity Church in Albuquerque. She leaves one brother, J.B. Landis of Sacramento, CA; two cousins, Charles DeBerry and wife, Nancy of Santa Rosa, CA, Margaret DeBerry James of Seal Beach, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2007, 11:00 a.m., at Christ Unity Church, 9800 Candelaria NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.
