HAGEN -- Ira Wayne Hagen, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1958, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Hagen. He is survived by his children, Kit Hagen Stein and husband, Ray, Scott Hagen and wife, Lori, all of Albuquerque; sisters, Marie Adams of Albuquerque, and Maxine Allen of Wyoming. Wayne loved telling the story of how he was 1 of 13 children born in the family barn, in Illinois, on August 29, 1923. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army (ETO) during World War II from 1943-1946. Wayne fell in love and married Betty in 1948. During their 37 years of marriage they enjoyed traveling the back roads of New Mexico fishing, fossil hunting and searching for the perfect piece of pottery. A scratch golfer, Wayne won numerous tournaments always playing in his bare feet. He was a machinist with ACF, Dow Chemical and GE in the aerospace field until his retirement in 1984. He had numerous hobbies that included refinishing furniture, buying and selling his wares at the weekly flea market, and to the delight of friends and neighbors, growing vegetables in his garden. He collected stamps, coins, and took pride in coaching Little League. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed the Yankees, Cubs and watching golf tournaments on TV. Wayne was known for his humor and fun loving spirit. Later in life he enjoyed his many friends over a cup of coffee at Walmart, playing cards at the Senior Center, and winning at slots in the casino. Wayne appreciated his sisters-in-law, Barb Kull especially for her hot meals and Eldred Dickerson for her company and friendship. He loved his cats Dinah, Kenzie, Montuck, and Buddha Boy catering to their every demand. His love for animals continued as he enjoyed feeding the birds even in his last days. A very special thanks for the wonderful care, support and love Wayne received from the nurses, staff and doctors at Laurel Heights Nursing Home and Sandia Hospice, his home for the last 5 months. Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life has already been held. In Wayne's memory, contributions may be made to the Animal Humane Society, in lieu of flowers.
