HERNDON -- Tal H. "Sonny" Herndon, 62, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, was called home on Monday, December 4, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Sam Ann Herndon of the family home; six step-children; three sisters, Shirley Bailey of Canadys, SC, Patricia Blitch of Charleston, SC, Paula Polk of Walterboro, SC; and one brother, Michael Herndon of Walterboro, SC. Also surviving him are numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews; best friends, Dennis Flynn and George Bracken; and many other special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tal and Gladys Herndon, and one sister, Helen Hudson. Sonny was born in Charleston, SC on September 18, 1944. He entered the United States Air Force in 1965 where he served in Helicopter Rescue in the Vietnam conflict amongst many numerous assignments around the world. He retired at Kirtland Air Force Base in 1990. His numerous awards were the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medals, Republic of Vietnam, Gallantry Cross with palm, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After his retirement, he went to work for the State of New Mexico as a Safety Consultant where he had a second retirement in 2002. He was an active member in the American Legion Post 49, American Legion Riders, and VFW Post 401. Sonny loved to bowl, hunt, and fish. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him. A Graveside Service will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, December 9, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel also on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Friends and family may visit French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE 275-3500
