CHAVEZ -- Escolastica (Laca) Chavez, a lifetime resident of Belen, passed away at her home on December 1, 2006, following a short illness surrounded by family and friends. Laca was born Feb. 10, 1924 in Belen, NM. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Antonio Jose and Juanita Castillo. She attended St. Mary's School and Belen High School. She worked with her husband of Ernest's New and Used Furniture Store in Belen until his passing in 1984. She also worked as a meat wrapper at Barbers Super Market in Albuquerque for several years and at Piggly Wigglys in Belen. For many years she volunteered at the Senior Citizens Food Bank and Commodity Center. She retired in 1982. Laca loved traveling and dancing and gatherings with her family and friends until ill health prevented her from continuing to do so. She was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio Jose and Juanita Castillo; her husband, Ernest L. Chavez; and two sisters, Vivian Hail and Hope Gates; also her daughter-in-law, Shirley Chavez. She is survived by her daughter, Ida Gardner and her husband, John; her son Edward Chavez and Racheal Jaramillo; granddaughters, Patricia and her husband, Gary Biehl, Mary Ellen and her husband, David Chavez, Delilah and her husband, Lalo Valtierra, Desiree and her husband, Drake Egan; grandson, Anthony J.Salcido; great-grandchildren, Caleb E. Lucero, Beitany Valtierra, the twins, Alejandro and Andres Valtierra and Anthony Jones; nieces, Jeanette Hackney and Carol Lee Smith; also her best pal, Alice Esquibel. Laca was firm in her spirituality, religious beliefs and faith. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. A viewing will be Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at Romero Funeral Home Chapel at 6:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. A final visitation will be on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willie Chavez, Gary Biehl, Lalo Valtierra, Johnny Sanchez, David Chavez, Joe Ray Chavez, Caleb Lucero and Anthony Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Prudence Carroll, Luciana Castillo, Anita Martinez, Daisy Sanchez, Mary Chavez, Patricia Sanchez, Theresa Chene, Frances Gabaldon, Lillian Lopez, Alice Chavez, and Robert Chavez.
