He was born on August 11, 1922 in Quincy, IL, to Mabel and Bernard Haverland. He was both a loving father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Dean Haverland was ordained Deacon in March, 1953, and Priest in 1954, on both occasions by Bishop Stoney. His Church Ministry has transported him to a variety of places: He was Assistant at St. Paul's in Oakland, California, from 1954-1955. He became Rector of St. Christopher's in Hobbs, NM, and St. Mary's in Lovington, NM. Both churches were constructed during his tenure from 1955 - 1957. Dean Haverland returned to California as Vicar of St. Mark's, Santa Clara, from 1957 - 1959. This interval included another church building construction. While in California, he continued his services to the Episcopal Church for twelve years as Rector at St. Peter's in Redwood City. Again, under his leadership, a new parish hall and education wing were erected. Dean Haverland returned to the Diocese of the Rio Grande as the Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. John in Albuquerque, NM, from 1971 - 1989. During his tenure at St. John's Cathedral, he directed the purchase of property, the construction of the new Cathedral House, and the refurbishing of the Cathedral to include the installation of the final eighteen stained glass windows. He also established the Cathedral Endowment Fund, and under his supervision, the Cathedral ministry was extended to the surrounding downtown community, in order that the Cross might minister to all inhabitants in the heart of the Inner City of Albuquerque. Dean Haverland retired after eighteen plus years and was then called to serve as the Interim Dean from 1989 - 1990 at Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, IN. After that short tenure, he returned once again to the Diocese of the Rio Grande as Executive to Bishop Kelshaw at the Diocesan House. In addition, he was appointed the Clergy Deployment Officer during the continuing years from 1994 - 1998. Dean Haverland went on to serve as the Provost/Interim Dean of St. John's Cathedral from 2001 - 2003. He continued as Executive to Bishop Steenson from 2005 - 2006. His other diocesan duties included the following activities: He was a member and President of the Standing Committee for a number of years, Deputy to the General Convention for seven years and Alternate for five further years, one of the founders of the Episcopal Charities organization, Chairman of the Retired Clergy of the diocese of the Rio Grande, as well as the Chairman of the Commission on Aging. In addition, he served eight years on the Board of the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, TX, representing the Diocese of the Rio Grande. Dean Haverland enjoyed his role as the Chairman of the North American Cathedral Deans Conferences for a period of ten consecutive years. He became known as the "Papa Dean" and Pastor to other Deans. He was also active in ecumenical affairs and maintained a lifelong interest in the ministry to the elderly. Dean Haverland was also Past President of the Council of Churches in California, and one of the Founders of the Episcopal Homes Foundation in California, in addition to being an active board member. He continued this same interest in retirement communities in Albuquerque, NM, serving as Founder and then President of the La Vida Llena Retirement Center. In Albuquerque he served on the Initiating Committee for the St. Martin's Hospitality Center, on the Board of Trustees of the University of Albuquerque for five years, Past President of the Rotary Club, and as a Paul Harris Fellow. Dean Haverland was also a Member and Past President of the Standing Committee for the Diocese of California, a Retreat and Conference Leader at the Washington Cathedral for Chaplains of the Armed Forces, and was widely known for his teachings on stewardship and planned giving. Above everything, Dean Haverland was known throughout his ministry as "Pastor" to lay people and clergy alike. Dean Haverland will lie in state at the Cathedral of St. John on Friday, December 1, 2006, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for visitation purposes.
