HARKNESS -- Merrill A. Harkness, age 89, died Monday, November 20, 2006, after a long illness. Merrill was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather; and was a role model and inspiration for his family, always showing high principles as a hard worker, and was a strong supporter for his family. He had many achievements during his long life, starting with sports in Buffalo Center, IA high school, where he was the Iowa state champion discus thrower in 1935, and at the University of Iowa where he was a member of the "I" Club and lettered in track and field and football for three years. Merrill served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated as an electrical engineer, and had a distinguished career as an engineer in power construction in Iowa, Texas, Illinois, New Mexico (at PNM), Utah, Oregon, and finally retiring from Arizona Public Service in 1982. Following his retirement, he assisted his daughter in her healthcare consulting business with computer support for many years. Mr. Harkness was preceded in death by his beloved wife, MaryBeth, in 1980. He is survived by his daughters, Susan Granucci and Loa Waldroop; three grandchildren, Kim Wee, Kirk Kousal, and Keith Kousal; and five great-grandchildren, Megan and Kaitlyn Wee, Justin and Shawna Kousal, and Felicity Bradley. He is also survived by his 96 year-old sister, Ruby Sleper, of Buffalo Center, Iowa. Pallbearers will be Kirk Kousal, Keith Kousal, Justin Kousal, Ralph Hill, and Gary Wee. Memorial Services will be held at French Mortuary, Lomas Boulevard Chapel, 10500 Lomas, NE, Saturday, November 25, 2006, 9:30 a.m., with burial to immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
