ANDERSON -- George H. Jr., Ph.D., ABD In Memoriam George H. Anderson Jr. George Hilary Anderson Jr., of Reston, VA and formerly of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on August 9, 2003 at his home in Reston, VA, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 18, 1928 in Washington, DC, he was the first of six children born to Blanche Louise Alestock and George Hilary Anderson Sr. He was the beloved husband of Margo Lynne whom he married on December 12, 1992 in the Washington, DC Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, George and Margo were blessed to share seven children and ten grandchildren. George graduated from Armstrong High School, Class of 1946, in Washington, DC. He attended and played football for Howard University. He joined the United States Navy and attended Radar and Submarine School in New London, CT. After his discharge from the Armed Forces, he worked several jobs before beginning his life-long career of helping people to improve human relations and communication skills development and realize their potential to grow and progress in life by taking responsibility for the choices they make. George was active in politics in New Mexico where he served as Chairman of the 1984 Rainbow Coalition Presidential Campaign in Albuquerque and assisted in the election of Governor Tony Aniya, as well as Senators and Representatives from the State of New Mexico. Particularly notable is the publication of the Anderson Report, wherein he documented his approach to assisting St. Mary's College of California to diffuse a difficult racially-based situation. George applied his professional and human development skills to helping corporations, federal, state, community, business, and educational entities. Job Corps, Westinghouse, New Mexico State government offices, and Washington, DC public schools were among his many clients. Ever a scholar, George strove for excellence in all of his academic pursuits. He received his undergraduate degree in Sociology, from the University of Albuquerque. He subsequently earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration and Certificate of Health Care Administration, from the University of New Mexico. He continued his pursuit of peace and justice by earning a Master's of Science Degree and Ph.D., ABD from the Institute of Conflict Analysis and Resolution, at George Mason University. George was also a member of the Mu Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and was the recipient of many awards for public service. In addition, he authored three books of poetry, many essays, and a book based upon the principles of love and truth in relationships. George was actively engaged in serving the Lord in many capacities from teaching children the basics of the Gospel to Ward Mission Leader, where he introduced many to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He was Stake Sunday School President and most recently served in a leadership capacity in the High Priest's Quorum of the Franklin Ward. George was a very special servant of the Savior and in this capacity, because of his great faith, encouraged others to return to their core where love, truth, kindness, and genuine caring reside. George was the loving father of Stacey Renee and Hilary Alethea Renee, both of whom preceded him in death, and of Caroline Elaine Anderson, George William Holmes; step-sons, Jay, Mark, and Shawn Bethea, and Eric Giordano. He was also the brother of Peggy B. Jackson, who preceded him in death and of Jack B., Gary L., and Jerry L. Anderson; and sister, Joan Anderson Ryberg. His memory will forever be cherished by his nieces, Erika and Shayla Anderson, Judith Campbell, and Jacqueline Coleman; nephews, Kenneth and Carlo Anderson, Glenn and Sean Edelin, Darron Jackson, Bernard and Michael Johnson; his ten grandchildren: Erika, Roman, Tanisha, Daine, Robert, Marianna, Nicholas, Sarah, Justine, and Mateo; and numerous relatives and devoted friends. For those wishing to honor George's life, the family suggests a contribution to the George H. Anderson Scholarship Fund sponsored by George Mason University Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR), 4400 University Drive, MS 4D3, Fairfax, VA 22030.
