SANCHEZ -- Alex G. Sanchez, age 82, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Alex, a caring husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, was very devoted to his family and to so many other people he knew. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Alex proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he received the Victory Medal, and he was honorably discharged. Alex was known to everybody in Belen and Socorro as "the Ponca Man" because he was a successful and popular businessman. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his kindness, generosity, and huge smile. Alex taught his children to work hard, to respect everyone, and to always be honest. He was preceded in death by his parents, Enriques Sanchez and Severita Gabaldon; brothers, Paul, Herman, and Gomisindo; and sisters, Hilaria Romero and Nicholasa Gomez. Alex is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sally; his children, Beatrice (Bea) Sanchez and husband, Bob Reis, Linda Raether and husband, Fred, Danny Sanchez and wife, Tracy Love; his beloved grandsons, Jesse Raether, and Ryan Raether; sister, Emma Aragon; brothers, Adolfo and Clemako (Kelly) Sanchez; special nephew, Raymond Sanchez; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend gratitude to Ambercare Hospice for the compassionate care given to Alex. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations in his name be made to the Alzheimer's Association New Mexico Chapter, 9500 Montgomery Blvd., Albuquerque, NM 87111. A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, May 4 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 6:00 p.m. A final visitation will take place at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Friday, May 5 at 8:30 a.m. with the Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.
