SMITH -- Frances Witham Smith, 81, died peacefully on Thursday, April 20, 2006. Born in Boulder, CO and raised in Burlington, VT, she graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in History. Frances was an editor of the FBI's Investigator Magazine in Washington, DC and it was there, in the choir of St. Patrick's Church, that she met her surviving husband of 54 years, Colonel James R. Smith, U.S. Army, Ret. In addition to her love of classical music, she was an avid reader and student of theology. She enjoyed gardening, entertaining and road trips through the Colorado Rockies. Although military orders took the family across the country and around the globe, her favorite spot was the seaside town of Pigeon Cove, MA where she spent idyllic summers as a child. Frances served on several city public safety committees and was librarian at the Aquinas Newman Center for ten years. Preceded in death by her infant son, Daniel, in 1963, Frances is survived by her beloved children, Marian Ciepiela and husband, Steve of Albuquerque, NM, Anne Smith and husband, Jason of Berthoud, CO, Madolyn Osborne and husband, Mark of Toronto, Canada, Mark Smith of Chicago, IL and David Smith and wife, Michele, of Castle Pines, CO; grandchildren, Adam, Annemarie and John Ciepiela, Abigail and Eliza Osborne, Natalie Smith, and Lily and Clara Smith; her sisters, Amy Goodale of Cary, NC and Marjorie Healy and husband, Dick of Westborough, MA; and many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Aquinas Newman Center on Friday, April 28, 2006, 11:00 a.m., followed by interment alongside Daniel in the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. A reception and belated birthday party honoring Frances will be held for friends at the family home on Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. French Mortuary 7121 Wyoming Blvd., NE (505) 823-9400
