GILBERT -- Alfred Gilbert, 91, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at his home in Socorro, NM surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 24, 1914 to Antonio and Ramona (Chavez) Gilbert in Belen, NM. He moved to Socorro in 1938 and was a Pharmacist at Socorro Drug Store. He married Maria Marcellina Margarita Pino in 1940 and he opened a Western Auto but due to the war, it was difficult to purchase merchandise for the business. In 1942, they went to California and both he and Marcella were employed in the Douglas Aircraft Factory for two years. In 1944, they returned to Socorro and got a franchise on Gambles store and later he took on Gene Torres as his partner. He sold his portion of the business to Gene and retired in 1969. He was ordained in the Catholic Church in 1974 and active in the Catholic Church in many ministries, including the Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary, St. Vincent de Paul and a Mayordomo. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marcella in 1987. He is survived by his daughters, Rosalie Sofranko and husband, Paul from Santa Rosa, CA, Gloria Wellman of Sunnyvale, CA and Patricia Griego and husband, Jerry of Socorro, NM; sons, Alfred "Carly" Gilbert and wife, Antonette (Cortez) from Albuquerque, NM and Chris Gilbert and wife, Dolores (Gonzales) from Espanola, NM; many nieces, nephews and friends. A rosary will be recited on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at San Miguel Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at San Miguel with Father John C. Daniel as Celebrant. Burial will be in the San Miguel Cemetery. Pallbearers are Steven Sofranko, Ryan Wellman, Tony Gilbert, Robert Lujan, Ernie Lujan Jr. and Don Chavez. Honorary Pallbearer is Robert Griego. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the "Food For Poor, Inc.", 550 SW 12th Ave., Deerfield Beach, FL, 33442. Arrangements are under the care of Steadman-Hall Funeral Home, 309 Garfield, Socorro, NM.
