NORTON -- John W. Norton, A resident of New Mexico since 1967 passed away December 18, 2005. John entered the service from Minnesota and retired from the U.S. Army having served as a paratrooper and later as a transport commander. A veteran of World War II, the liberation of the Phillipines, the Korean conflict, and European duty. He served as Transportation Officer with Joint Task Force 8 (Exercise Dominic) during the last atmospheric (high drop) nuclear testing program in the Pacific Ocean area. Commissioned through OCS, attended various military schools including the Advance Transportation School and the Command and General Staff College, awarded numerous medals, ribbons, and decorations. Colonel Norton is survived by nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews; and special niece-in-law, Mavis Oesterich; and dear friend, Maxine McDowell. Cremation has taken place (no services); interment Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, next to his beloved mother. Donations in memory may be made to the Animal Humane Association of New Mexico.
