COOPER -- David D. Cooper, businessman, philanthropist, husband, father, grandfather passed away in his home on Monday, October 10, 2005, at the age of 87. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and raised in Denver. He was married in 1941 to his beloved wife Martha Rosenblum Cooper, and they shared 54 wonderful years. He joined the Army Air Corps shortly after his marriage and, as the lead navigator, flew many combat missions over Germany during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He founded a small Army surplus store, Kilroys, and built it into Cooper’s Western Wear, now The Western Warehouse, which he proudly owned until shortly before his death. As an immigrant, he felt blessed by the great opportunity provided by this country. He cared deeply for his community, and devoted much of his energy to political and charitable causes, and urging others to do the same. He endowed the Martha and David Cooper Child Center at the Jewish Community Center, and supported many other charitable organizations; he and his wife were named Philanthropists of the Year in 1991. He was a miserable golfer but he loved being with his friends. Later in his life, he became an active part of Rotary of Albuquerque. He had three daughters and two sons-in-law, Roberta Cooper Ramo and Dr. Barry Ramo, Paula Cooper Black and the late Jack Black, and Corinne Cooper, and three grandchildren, Joshua Cooper Ramo, Jennifer Anne Ramo and her husband Dr. David Kutz, and Katherine Cooper Black. He was delighted to find a second chance at love and shared the last eight years of his life with Gloria Otten. The family wishes that there be no flowers, and that any contributions be made to Planned Parenthood of New Mexico, 719 San Mateo Blvd. NE, 87108, or the Martha and David Cooper Fund at the Albuquerque Community Foundation, 3301 Menaul Blvd. NE, 87107. Services will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, 2:00 p.m., at Congregation B'nai Israel, 4401 Indian School Rd. NE. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE 843-6333
