BERUBE -- Raymond E. Berube, Jr., 67, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died Monday, September 19, 2005 at Albuquerque Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 1/2 years, Jacqueline Ferreri Berube of Albuquerque; two sons, Craig M. Berube and wife, Pamela, and grandson, Julien of Denver, CO and Wayne P. Berube of Albuquerque. Mr. Berube is also survived by three brothers, Fred Berube of Seattle, WA, Marvin Berube of St. Augustine, FL, and Joseph Berube of Vestal, NY; sister, Catherine Dyer of Forest City, PA. In 1956, with thirty dollars in his pocket, Ray Berube hitchhiked from Vestal, NY to Albuquerque, NM the day after his high school graduation. His goal was to enter the University of New Mexico. He was immediately enrolled at UNM and became a "Walk On" star of the Track Team. He held several distance records for both the school and the conference for a number of years. While attending UNM, he became a model cadet in the UNM Naval ROTC Squadron. Upon graduation he received his commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy. He trained and became an instructor as a Frogman, (the predecessors of the Seals). While on leave from his station in the Indian Ocean on the USS Hornet, he married his college sweetheart and the love of his life, Jackie Ferreri. Ray finished his naval career as a Lieutenant and he and Jackie returned to the Land of Enchantment with their two sons in 1969. Ray served as the president of the New Mexico Automotive Dealers Association for thirty years. His duties included lobbying at the local, state, and federal level. Ray excelled at this duty and became one of the most respected and dependable lobbyists in the United States. He also became a mentor for several local association executives and quickly assumed a position of leadership in his profession. Ray was known in Santa Fe as a trustworthy expert for the automotive retail industry. He was tireless in his job and as a lobbyist initiated many legislative endeavors that are still used as models for legislation throughout the United States. Ray's career and his personal life have been admired by all who have had the pleasure to work and associate with him. Together with his wife, Ray exhibited the highest of standards in this community and their church, Our Lady of the Annunciation. Ray will be missed by those he touched with his generous nature and will be remembered by all for the integrity and professionalism with which he conducted himself.
