MALDONADO -- Steven Maldonado, 71, passed away early Sunday morning, February 27, 2005 in Albuquerque after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 3, 1933 in Escobosa, NM to Adolofo Maldonado and Jesusita Lujan Maldonado. In August of 1955 he married Helen Portillo of Three Rivers, NM. She survives him at his home in Bluewater Village, NM. This year they celebrated fifty years of marriage. In 1959 Steven moved his family from Albuquerque, NM to Los Angeles, CA. There he worked as a journeyman floor installer until founding M&M Floor Covering in 1975. He retired from his business in 1993 and settled on a ranch in Bluewater Village, NM. He named the ranch Cedarosa. He had a love for horses, listening to rippling water of streams, and devoting his time to his wife and family. Steven served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He is remembered for his love of life and his quick wit. He was a generous and caring man often helping family members and friends with a variety of life issues. He was a kind and genuine man who taught others by example. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Helen Portillo Maldonado; one daughter, Diana Palacios of Albuquerque; two sons, Danny Maldonado of Bluewater Village and Steve Maldonado and his wife, Cindy, of Longview, WA; five grandchildren, Alfredo Palacios of Albuquerque, Daniel Maldonado of Bluewater Village, Mitchell Maldonado, Catherine Maldonado, and Stephanie Maldonado, all of Longview, WA; one brother, Willie Maldonado and his wife, Viola of El Segundo, CA; five sisters, Alice Mares of Mesa, AZ, Minnie Anzures and her husband, Lucio of Perris, CA, Annie Romero and her husband, Lawrence of Torrance, CA, Carmen Jaramillo and her husband, Augustine of Albuquerque, and Chris Mascarenas of Gilbert, AZ. Numerous nieces and nephews survive as well. He is also survived by his extended family including Tony and Loni Martinez of Albuquerque, Luciano and Mary Ann Ortiz of Albuquerque, Linda Heitzman and her husband, Cornel of Phoenix AZ, and Julia Torres and her husband, Bobby of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolofo Maldonado and Jesusita Lujan Maldonado; and one brother, Onofre Maldonado. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Grants Mortuary Chapel. Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Saint Teresa de Avila Catholic Church with Father Matthew Keller officiating. Veterans Graveside Service will be performed by the VFW Post #3221 at the Cedarosa Ranch, following the Funeral Mass, where burial will take place. Pallbearers will be Danny Maldonado, Steve Maldonado, Daniel Maldonado, Mitchell Maldonado, Alfredo Palacios, and Damien Smith. Honorary Pallbearers include Willie Maldonado, Tony Martinez, and Luciano Ortiz. Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
