DOYLE -- Monte Dean Doyle, age 66, died at home on December 3, 2004 after living an exciting and rewarding life. Born on August 14, 1938 in Hollis, Oklahoma he moved with his mother and brother to Albuquerque in 1951 when he was a junior high school student and immediately began his great passion for sports-discovering track and playing baseball, football and basketball. A member of Highland High School's class of '56, he lettered in three varsity sports each of his three years establishing the New Mexico high school pole vault record, which stood for numerous years. As a pole-vaulter for the University of New Mexico, he was the Skyline Conference champion-establishing a collegiate record. In 1961 he graduated from UNM with a BS in biology and chemistry; and, as he was about to be drafted, he accepted a five year commission in the United States Marine Corps as a naval aviator. Monte flew the A-4E Skyhawk for two squadron rotations to Viet Nam in 1965 and 1966 and ended his USMC career as a Captain. He spent the next 34 years of his aviation career with Continental Airlines flying the Pacific and Atlantic routes ultimately as a DC-10 Captain "commuting" to Honolulu, New York and Houston. Even though the last eight years of his life were marked by a fierce battle with melanoma, he managed to live his life with spirit and bravery. Monte was a man of few words, deep convictions and great loyalty. He liked to say, he loved his wife and children "slightly more than the game of golf." In addition to golf, he was an avid reader of Southwestern history and Indian lore; he had a keen appreciation of opera and classical music; he was a reluctant but successful adobe layer and gardener. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin LeRoy Doyel and his father-in-law, John Andrew (Jack) Williams. Those left to remember him are his wife, Gale Williams Doyel, their three children, daughter Ashley Mossman and husband Andrew of Corrales; daughter Stephanie Brinkley and husband Brett of St. Petersburg, Florida; son John Mason Doyel and wife Kendra Merritt Doyel of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren Bennett Andrew Mossman, Jack William Mossman, Shea Elise Brinkley, Mason Doyel Brinkley and Karsen Elizabeth Doyel; his mother Jessie Dean Doyel of Albuquerque and brother Leroy (Lee) Doyel and wife Nell of Pensacola, Florida; two nephews, Matthew and David Doyel; his mother-in-law Geneva Scott Williams of Albuquerque; his father's widow Charlene Doyel of Rogerson, Idaho; and a host of friends including his USMC VMA-311 squadron mates and his ACC golfing buddies. Also, missing him is his Jack Russell, Terrier Turf's Flashman, better known as "Bad Billy." Private services were held at the UNM Alumni Chapel on Tuesday, December 7. Should friends desire, memorial gifts can be made in Monte's name to the Doyel Family Fund, Albuquerque Community Foundation, PO Box 36960, 87176-6960. "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint."
