STARNES -- Clarence Arthur Starnes passed away August 25, 2004 after a brief illness. He was born May 12, 1944 in Indiana, and his family moved to Albuquerque in 1948. He was known as "Wilt" by his friends and classmates at Valley High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He is remembered by many as someone who was greatly liked by all. After graduating from Valley High School in 1962, he attended the University of New Mexico for two years. He later became manager for Sherwin-Williams Paint Co. in Albuquerque for 15 years. Later he was employed by Halliburton Co. in the Texas Panhandle and retired there after 15 years. Clarence moved back to Albuquerque in 1996 and came out of retirement to work for Way-Cor Redi-Mix, Inc. for five years. He was preceded in death by his father. Arthur is survived by his mother, Betty Starnes; and son, Andrew Starnes. He was big man physically with a huge sense of humor, a soft spoken manner, and a great disposition. "Wilt" will be missed by many for a long time. A visitation will be held Friday August 27, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. in Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Services will be held Saturday August 28, 2004 at 2:00 p.m., also in Palm Chapel of Strong Thorne Mortuary, with internment to follow at Fairview Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Wayne Corley, Walter DeVaney, Larry Seaborn, David Chavez, Jerry Weger, and John W. Higgins. Services are under the direction of: Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave SE 842-8800
