GOSSETT -- Iva Alice Gossett, was born in Lakewood, New Mexico on February 5, 1915 and passed away quietly at home near Mtn. Grove, MO on March 6, 2004 after a long illness. She was 89. Alice was a homemaker and loving mother. She and her husband were married in Albuquerque, NM on January 5, 1935. They raised their daughter, Judith, in Albuquerque, NM. Alice helped her husband with his business during those years. They later moved to San Jose, California participating in numerous activities, including a senior jazz band. For the last 18 years she has called Mountain Grove, MO her home. She was soft spoken and even tempered and an example of optimism with everyone. She lived every day like it was a new gift. Alice built up rapport with whomever she came in contact with, wherever she lived and was a solace and wise counselor for anyone in need. She guided many people with her wisdom. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Swacina and son-in-law, William J. Swacina of Mtn. Grove, MO; heart daughters, Cathy Lathrom, Xzanthia Zuber-Fortner and Mary Bishop; as well as many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vere K. Gossett; her father, Tolbert Benton; mother, Cloy Ann Brazeal Benton; sister, JoAnne James; brothers, Jay Benton and C.W. Benton. She was loved by many friends and relatives and will be sorely missed but remembered as a woman who was loving, charming, classy and possessing the ability to heal hearts with her great sense of humor.
