FENDER -- Verna M. (Tabet) Fender, a resident of Albuquerque, the Angels came for our beloved Verna at 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Verna was very courageous, strong, and had a very positive attitude throughout her long battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving companion, friend and very devoted husband, James Fender; daughter, Tammy of Idaho; sister, Emily Schuler of Isleta; step-daughter, Edna Way and husband, John of Sacramento, CA; step-son, Dan Fender and wife, Doreen of Sacramento, CA; nephews, Ben Lucero and wife, Victoria of Las Vegas, NV, and Leonard Schuler and wife, Vickie of Arizona; five granddaughters; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Ben Tabet; son, Gregory; god-son, Ronnie Lucero; and a very special uncle, Joe Lente. Verna was truly proud to have served her country during the Korean Conflict. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954,received training at Bainbridge, Maryland and served at the NTC in San Diego, CA. She received a good conduct medal and National Defense Service medal. While in the Navy, she made many friends, some of which still kept in contact with her until her passing. She was a graduate of Los Lunas High School, attended Albuquerque Business College, and University of New Mexico. After WWII, She was employed many years in a family business at Isleta Pueblo, and went on to other employment at Albuquerque National Bank, Blue Cross-Blue Shield of NM, SIPI Personnel, BIA Records Department and as a licensed cosmetology instructor at Academy Beauty School. She finished her employment as a certified medical transcriptionist at the VA Medical Center. She retired in 1983. She was a charter member of WIMSA, a charter member of Roadrunner Unit Four of the Waves and a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a life member of DAV and a 30 year member of Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. 401. She will long be remembered for her creative talents, generosity, kindness and compassion for others. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends. Her precious little smile will be missed the most. She and husband, Jim were truly a "team" and enjoyed their retirement together, retiring one week apart. They enjoyed their extensive travels together to many places. They especially enjoyed visiting their children and grandchildren in California and Idaho. Verna had many friends, who loved her and she returned their love by keeping in touch with them for many years. God has taken a jewel for His crown, our Precious Verna. Rosary will be recited Monday, January 19, 2004, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel with Deacon Al McLane reciting. Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, January 20, 2004, 9:00 a.m. at The Shrine of St. Bernadette with Father Tom Zotter, Celebrant.
