GENERIS -- Louis James Generis, born January 9, 1913, was the first of eight children born to Maria and Demitrios Tzineris, Greek immigrants who came to America in 1912 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. The couple had seven other children, Stella, Athena, Steve, Sylvia, Helen, Peter and Angelo. Louis grew up during the Great Depression. Demitrios support his family comfortably during this difficult time by working hard in his wholesale produce business. Louis attended Socrates, a Greek school, as well as attending McKinley High School where he met his future wife, Una Mae Stanley. The two fell in love and were married in Chicago in 1935. Their first child, a daughter named Mary Lynne, was followed by another daughter, Diane, five years later. Louis, a self-made business man, opened a neighborhood tavern in Chicago that his wife named The Friendly Corner. The couple and their two daughters moved to Albuquerque in 1951 settling in what is now the University district. Louis and Una Mae's third child, Gay Louise, was followed by their fourth child, a son, Gregory Louis. Continuing in the liquor and restaurant business, he later owned The Tower Bar located on 2nd street, The Magic Bar, The Cordial Inn on San Mateo and also The Yum-Yum Tree, an ice cream and sandwich shop on San Pedro. The couple moved to the Holiday Park neighborhood where they lived together for over 40 years. Louis and Una Mae were married for 61 wonderful years. Sadly, Una Mae passed away in 1996, following a long illness. Louis was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Steve and Peter, as well as his sister, Stella. He is survived by his children, Mary Lynne Kuhn and Gay Generis, both of Albuquerque, Gregory and Barbara Generis of Edgewood, NM, and Diane and Jim Book of Scottsdale, AZ. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Steven Kuhn and wife Laura of Tustin, CA, Valerie Wells and husband Ron of Farmington, NM, Erin Maw and husband Charles of Denver, CO, Amy Halpin and husband Bob of Goodyear, AZ, David Book and wife, Kresta of Queen Creek, AZ, Christina Book-Stubbs and husband, Jon of Lafayette, CO and Jacob Generis and Lori Hostetter and Nick Hostetter, all of Albuquerque. He also leaves ten great-grandchildren, Stevie Kuhn, Matthew Wells, Rachel Wells, Melissa Wells, Jonathan Wells, C.J. Maw, Harley Maw, Astrid Halpin, Lillian Book and Willow Book. Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Louis James Generis, 90, passed away Wednesday, December 17 at the Lovelace Hospice following a short illness. His dedication to hard work and his love for his family set a wonderful example for all of us and his will be greatly missed.
