GARCIA -- Dr. Carlos Ernesto Garcia. On Monday, September 29, 2003, Dr. Garcia passed away when his 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza crashed west of the Belen, New Mexico Alexander Airport. Dr. Garcia was a lifelong resident of New Mexico, and a lifelong pilot. Dr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 38 years Anita Bencomo Garcia. They lived on a small farm just north of Belen, New Mexico. Their children are Marcus Garcia and his wife, Christine, Camillia Garcia-Sanchez and husband, Robert C. Sanchez, Monica Garcia, Juan Carlos Garcia and wife, Heather Garcia. Their grandchildren are Ryan, Jason and Kevin Sanchez. Dr. Garcia is also survived by his brother, Jose Ignacio Garcia and his family as well as many other nieces and nephews. Dr. Garcia's interests included his family, operating a small farm, his work, flying, rebuilding automobiles and farm equipment, and teaching. Dr. Garcia had been involved in the Catholic Church as an alter server, lector, choir member, participant in "Los Pastores," of the Mesilla Valley and member of the Serra Clubs of Mesilla Valley and Albuquerque. Dr. Garcia was born on May 14, 1936 and was raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Dr. Garcia attended grade school at Our Lady of Sorrows and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1953. Dr. Garcia's parents who precede him in death were Ms. Sinforosa "Rose" Abeyta Garcia and Mr. Jose Ignacio Garcia. Dr. Garcia attended New Mexico State University where he received his Bachelor's, Master's and Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1966. Dr. Garcia also attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University, Ft. McNair, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Garcia was a registered Professional Engineer. He began his career at White Sands Missile Range in 1953 as a co-op student for New Mexico A & M. He worked for the U.S. Army, Douglas Aircraft Co., Ling Temco Vought (LTV), the Department of Energy Albuquerque Area Operations Offices (DOE), and the University of California at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Dr. Garcia worked at White Sands Missile Range as a co-op student, as an Aerospace Engineer for the U.S. Army (Nike Zeus missile program), an Aerospace Engineer for Douglas Aircraft Co. (Nike Ajax, Nike Hercules, Nike Zeus, and Honest John missile programs), and as a Senior Scientist in the Apollo Program for LTV. While at DOE, Dr. Garcia's positions included Chief of Nuclear Materials Management Branch, Director of Environment Safety and Health Division, and Director of Special Programs Division. His most current position was as a Project Manager for Department of Defense, Environmental Activities, at LANL. During his career, Dr. Garcia taught at several universities including New Mexico State University, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and the University of New Mexico. Dr. Garcia was a published scientist and honors given to him included designation as Centennial Distinguished Alumni and as a Friend of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Member of the Mechanical Engineering Academy at New Mexico State University, Society of Sigma Xi, DOE Special Achievement Award and EEO Award, various Who's Who Edtions, and American Men and Women of Science. A Rosary will be held at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Albuquerque, New Mexico on Friday, October 4, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. Should friends desire, visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m., until the Rosary services. Mass will be celebrated at Queen of Heaven Church, 5311 Phoenix Ave., N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at 11:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Queen of Heaven Scholarship Fund, 5311 Phoenix Ave., N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico (505) 881-2484.
