Douglas -- Dr. William Kennedy Douglas, 76, a resident of Albuquerque died, Sunday, November 15, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Mariwade Douglas of the family home; one son, Michael Wade Douglas and his wife, Janeen Counts of Tijeras, NM; and two grandchildren, Joshua and Kate. He retired as a full Colonel from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of service. He worked from 1959-1962 as the personal physician of the first seven astronauts. He remained with NASA through the flights of Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn and Scott Carpenter. He retired in 1977 from the US Air Force and worked at McDonnell Douglas as Life Sciences director on design of the space station. Bill retired in 1988 and moved to Albuquerque. He was an amateur Radio operator, call sign N50BT (Dr. Bill). Dr. Douglas was a member of the American Legion, Aerospace Medical Association, a Fellow of the College of Physicians and member of the American Association for Advancement of Science. He was one of the founders of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Services will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Cooper Ave. NE, 87106 with Leroy Elmore officiating.
