Sovereign -- Rev. Floyd B. Sovereign died Friday, April 10, in Las Cruces, NM. He was born in Buffalo, NY, the son of Freeman Floyd Sovereign and Carrie Adeline Bradley. He graduated from Lafayette High School and received his B.A. from Houghton College. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. In 1944, he married Marie Fearing. He was Pastor of Calvary Evangelical Church in Rochester, NY for three years. He then served the Presbyterian Church in Brazil as an Itinerant Evangelist for nine years, during which time he supervised the building of a church in Blumenau, Santa Catarina. For three years, he taught church history and comparative religions and served as Dean of students in the Presbyterian Seminary of Campinas in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. From 1963-1974, he was the full-time Chaplain at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque and served as Interim Pastor at various churches in the Albuquerque area. From 1974 until his retirement in 1984, he was Pastor of Westkirk United Presbyterian Church in Pompano Beach, FL. He was skilled at woodworking and was known for playing the musical saw. Pastor Sovereign is survived by his wife, Marie Sovereign; daughter, Elizabeth Anderson and her husband, Dale of Evergreen, CO; son, Paul Arthur Sovereign and his wife, Cathy of Albuquerque; son, David Bradley Sovereign of San Francisco, CA; a sister, Amy Erbele of Raleigh, NC. A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium of University Terrace Good Samaritan Village of Las Cruces, NM.
