Hammer -- Jack E. Hammer, 76, Lt. Colonel United States Air Force Retired, passed on to be with the Lord on 13 December 1999. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Helen, who passed away on September 22, 1999. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Doty. Jack is survived by his sister, Dorothy Brugenhemke of Raleigh, NC; three daughters and their families, Cindy Kennedy and husband, Ken, Susie Norlander and husband, Mark, Kate Davis and husband, Dennis; grandchildren, Andrew and Jason Kennedy, Russ and Jeni Norlander, and Whitney, Mandy and Mikal Davis; great-grandchild, Justin Kennedy. John was born 5 September 1923 in Omaha, Nebraska to Ed and Peggy Hammer. Following his education and the outbreak of WWII, Jack enlisted in the ArmyAir Corps. Following his training and flight instruction, he was married to Doty Hunt in 1943. He then went to the Burma-China Theater and flew the infamous"Hump" for the duration of the war. Jack was a lifelong member of the Hump Pilots Association. Following the end of the war, Jack returned to Omaha with wife. Daughters, Cindy and Susie were born in 1946 and 1948. Doty was stricken with cancer and died in 1955. Jack pressed on and met and married his second wife, Helen in 1956. Daughter, Kate was born in 1957. For the remainder of his career, Jack was assigned numerous duties which included flying B-36 and KC-135 tankers. Jack retired from the Air Force in 1968 and made his home in Albuquerque. He had been witness to the birth of his grandchildren and great-grandchild, and had enjoyed watching them grow. Jack has slipped the surly bonds of earth and now has touched the face of God. He will be missed. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial service will be held. Date and time will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jack's favorite charity, Boy's Town.
