Brookes -- Capt. Charles Stephen"Steve" Brookes, USN (Ret.) Born October 26, 1920 in Dayton, Ohio to Frank H. and Marjorie T. Brookes (both Deceased) passed away December 23, 1999. Survived by his wife, Charlene; daughter, Barbara (husband Michael) Harney; grandchildren, Kevin and Kaitlin Harney of Capistrano Beach, CA. His sister Pauline (husband Robert) Millar, Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Nieces and nephews, Andrew Millar, Frank Millar, Malcolm Millar, Darcy Timmons all of Milton-Freewater, OR, Heather Chism, Tigard, OR, and Michael Millar of Burnaby, British Columbia. An avid golfer he was a member of the Four Hills Country Club. Steve was a carrier pilot during WWII, flying combat missions from several aircraft carriers, including USS Randolf, USS Lexington and USS Oriskany and continued serving in the Navy until his retirement after over 33 years. His decorations and Medals include the Navy Cross (with Gold Star), Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense (2), Vietnam Service, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, navy Occupation Service, Korean Service, United Nations Service, WWII Victory, American Campaign, American Defense Service, Philippine Liberation, Philippine Presidential Unit Commendation, China Service, Legion of Merit and Purple Heart. Capt. Brookes arrived in Albuquerque in August 1970 after serving two years in Okinawa as Commander Fleet Activities Ryukus and Naval Base Commander in Naha. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, December 29, 1999 at the Kirtland Air Force Base East Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Those wishing to attend should enter through the Wyoming Gate.
