Bess -- Earnest M. Bess died unexpectedly Saturday, June 26, 1999. Mr. Bess was born in Mountain Grove, Missouri, October 17, 1919, the son of Mary Luetta and Q.C. Bess. Bess is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; four children, The Rev. Sandra S. Bess of Rio Rancho, C.C. Bess and wife, Maryann of Las Cruces, Jim Bess and wife, Melody Zownir of Albuquerque and Bob Bess and wife, Phyllis of Fort Worth, TX. Mr. Bess' grandchildren are Joanne Truelove and husband, Jeff, Brad Bess and wife, Connie, Hillery Bess, Christopher Bess, Katy Bess, Jesse Zownir-Bess and Tyler Zownir-Bess; plus six great-grandchildren. Bess and his parents moved to New Mexico in 1921, where he was educated in the Albuquerque Public School system, graduating from Albuquerque High School in 1936. He then attended UNM and started his first business, Bess Tire Company, which at that time was located at 4th and Gold. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and was stationed in San Diego, CA, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Bess and his family returned to Albuquerque, where he worked with his father in the furniture business. Later he became a Real Estate Broker and worked in the real estate business until the time of his death. Bess was active in the Optimist Club, the Farm Bureau and P.T.A.'s while his children in school. He served on the Bernalillo County Zoning Commission for several years. Bess was a faithful churchman all of his life, serving when asked. A Requiem Memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 1, 1999 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. John B. Haverland, The Rev. Sandra S. Bess, and The Rev. Samuel L. Hall will officiate at the service.
