Herrera -- Joe O. Herrera, 12/30/1936-6/1/1999. After a year of courageously fighting a battle of heart disease, Joe came back home to his beloved community of La Jara, where he calmly waited for his maker. Joe retired from the N.M. Highway Department, after 30 years of dedicated service. He belonged to the Guadalupanos and participated in the Spanish choir for many years, and also a cursillisto. Joe served as a board member of the La Jara Water Association for 18 years. He has been recognized with employee of the year and safety awards. He was active in church and civic activities and will be greatly missed. Joe's first love was his family who always came first with him, and then his friends, and the communities of Cuba and La Jara. After retirement he spent hours walking on his beloved ranch checking every inch of land he had, he so loved the outdoors, his woods and animals. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Leon and Dolores Herrera; one brother, Roque; three sisters, Sylvianita Valdez, Armanda Aragon; and as of last month, Annabele Herrera. Joe is survived by his loving wife Georgia; his son, Patrick; two daughters, Debbie and Eufemia; his pride and joy granddaughter Carla; and and great-granddaughter Jaylem; his four brothers, Lucario, Willie and his wife Lucille, Remy and wife Verla, Armandos and wife Lillie; four sisters, Edna and husband Joe, Treny and husband Ruben, Adelina and husband Leo, Mary and husband Curtis; many nephews and nieces; and his mother-in-law Ferminia Lovato. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cuba, NM this evening. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba, N.M. Interment to follow at Santo Nino Cemetery in La Jara, N.M. Pallbearers will be Ralph Silva, Ray Lovato, Ernie Garcia, Fidel Trujillo, Lucianio Valdez and Climaco Lucero. Honorary bearers will be the La Jara and Cuba Guadalupanos. Services entrusted to Alameda Mortuary, 9420 4th St NW. Gary F. Santillanes, C.F.S.P.
